Warriors handle business at home, win 25 - 14 against the Titans.

Frank Schipani, September 16th, 2014

The Shanghai Warriors were victorious in a week one match-up against the Shanghai Titans by a final score of 25 – 14. The first score of the game came when the Titans connected on a 38 yard pass down the sideline for a score. The Titans would attempt a 2 pt. conversion but failed the attempt, making the score 6 – 0. On the ensuing kick return, Chris Gardner returned the kick for a 79 yard touchdown to swing momentum back to the Warriors. QB Tim Gomez would convert the teams 2 point conversion to put the Warriors up by the score of 8 – 6.

After the touchdown, the Warriors defense made immense adjustments that resulted in them only allowing 89 total yards for the game. They were able to hold the Titans potent ground game for 13 yards on 15 carries. Further, their passing game was an anemic 4/16 for 76 total yards. The Warriors defense achieved this goal by getting constant pressure on the Titans quarterback, who was sacked 3 times and intercepted once.

When the defense was off the field, the Warriors offense was occupied with controlling the clock, establishing the ground game, and methodically moving down the field. The offense would finish the game with 246 total yards (153 rushing yards and 93 through the air). Quarterback Tim Gomez would score two offensive touchdowns with his legs, while Kicker Boris Criquet was able to make a 38 yard field goal.

With an early divisional win early in the season, the Warriors are tied for first place with the Shanghai Nighthawks. Coincidentally, the Warriors will square off against the Nighthawks on Saturday, September 27th at Luwan Stadium. The winner will have sole control of the division and firm control over their playoff aspirations.

Warriors stumble on the road, lose  22-16 to the Shanghai Titans

Frank Schipani, June 15th, 2014

The Shanghai Warriors lost their first game of the preseason to the Shanghai Titans in Pudong.

Throughout the entire first half both teams were gridlocked in a defensive battle. The Warriors had several opportunities to score throughout the first half but squandered them. On two seperate drives, the Warriors missed field goals that could have put them ahead. In addition, the Titans running attack was stalling and the passing game was sporadic. As a result, the halftime score remained 0-0.

In the second half, the Titans began to make adjustments and capitalize on their opportunities to score. They scored first on a punt return that was ran back for a touchdown. Following the score, they also converted a two point conversion, making the game 8-0. The Warrior offense was having difficulty retaliating and continued to stall as did the special teams unit. Following another stalled Warriors offensive drive, the Warriors punter dropped the snap and wound up getting tackled on the Warrior 15 yard line. The following play, the Titans scored on a run play and converted another 2 point conversion bringing to score to 16-0.

The Warriors defense tried to swing the momentum back when they got a safety on a Titans run play, bringing the score to 16-2. Following the safety, the Warriors offensive put a touchdown on the scoreboard through the air to close the gap 16-8.

In the middle of the 4th quarter, the TItans scored their final touchdown on a 4th down pass but did not convert the two point conversion, leaving the score 22-8. The Warriors responded with a touchdown of their own through the air again and also converted the two point conversion to make the game 22-16.

Following the touchdown, the Warriors succeeded with a masterful onside kick that gave the Warriors the ball and the opportunity to tie the game with several minutes to go in the fourth quarter. However, the offense did not capitalize and wound up turning the ball over. The Titans would run out the clock and win the game by a final score of 22-16.

The Warriors will conclude their preseason by having a dual practice / scrimmage with the Hangzhou Ospreys on June 25th.
